Shrimati Damayanti Joshi was born on 5 December 1928 in a Maharashtrian Brahmin family. He started dancing from his childhood. She initially received her dance training from the troupe of Sreesitaram Prasad and Madame Maneka. He subsequently trained under Achanmaharaja, Lachhumaharaja, and Shambhumharaja. Apart from Kathak, Mrs. Damayanti Joshi also learned Bharatanatyam, Kathakali, and Manipuri dance forms.

Achievements and Performance

Smt. Damayanti Joshi has performed many dances abroad and has been a member of the Indian cultural delegation in China and Japan. She does not like much pomp and show. Damayanti Joshi received her first prize for dance at the Dance Olympiad held in Berlin within the year 1936. He performed at the age of 15 with Madame Maneka’s troupe in all the well-known European cities. Shrimati Damayanti Joshi has also been the first woman in the world to use Sadi as a costume for Kathak dance.

She was the first student at the Sri Rajarajeshwari Bharata Natya Kala Mandir in Mumbai, where she was mentored by Guru T. K. Learned Bharat Natyam from Mahalingam Pillai, who was involved in the Natavanars. After the mid-1950’s Damyanti was established herself as a successful solo Kathak dancer.
She was trained from Pandits, Achan Maharaj, Lachhu Maharaj, and Shambhu Maharaj of Lucknow Gharana and Guru Hiralal of Jaipur Gharana. In particular, at the Kathak Center, Delhi, he trained under Shambhu Maharaj. She was also the guru of Bireeshwar Gautama.

He also taught Kathak at Indira Kala Vishwa Vidyalaya, Khairagarh, and Kathak Center in Lucknow. He has been awarded the Sangeet Natak Akademi in (1968) and the Padma Shri in 1970 by the Government of India. Shrimati Damayanti Joshi Ji is also featured in the 1971 Film Division documentary on Kathak by the Government of India, and another film titled “Damayanti Joshi” directed by Hukumat Sarin was made in 1973. Smt Damayanti Joshi Ji died on 19 September. , 2004 at his home in Dadar, Mumbai.

श्रीमती दमयंती जोशी जी की जीवन-यात्रा।  जिनहोने कथक नृत्य के इतिहास में अपना बहुत योगदान दिया आज हम उन्ही की जीवनी के बारे में जानेगे।  

दमयंती जोशी जी का जन्म 5 दिसंबर 1928 को एक महाराष्ट्रीयन ब्राह्मण परिवार में हुआ था। उन्होने आपने बचपन से ही नृत्य करना शुरू कर दिया था। उन्होंने अपना नृत्य प्रशिक्षण शुरू में श्रीसीताराम प्रसाद और मैडम मेनका की मंडली  से प्राप्त किया। उसके बाद में उन्होंने अच्चनमहाराज, लछुमहाराज और शंभुमहाराज के तहत प्रशिक्षण लिया। कथक के अलावा श्रीमती दमयंती जोशी जी ने भरतनाट्यम, कथकली और मणिपुरी नृत्य विधाो को भी सीखा।

उपलब्धियां और प्रदर्शन

श्रीमती दमयंती जोशी जी ने  विदेशों में भी कई नृत्य प्रस्तुत दी  हैं और वह चीन और जापान में भारतीय सांस्कृतिक प्रतिनिधिमंडल की सदस्य रही हे। दमयंती जोशी बहुत अधिक धूमधाम और शो पसंद नहीं करती हैं। दमयंती जोशी को वर्ष 1936 में बर्लिन में आयोजित नृत्य ओलंपियाड में उनके नृत्य के लिए पहला पुरस्कार मिला।  उन्होंने 15 वर्ष की आयु में मैडम मेनका की मंडली  के साथ सभी जानीमानी  यूरोपीय शहरों में अपनी प्रस्तुतिया दी। श्रीमती दमयंती जोशी जी साडी को कथक नृत्य की कॉस्ट्यूम के रूप में इस्तेमाल करने वाली दुनिया की पहली महिला भी रही  हैं।

वह मुंबई के श्री राजराजेश्वरी भरत नाट्य कला मंदिर में पहली छात्रा थीं, जहाँ उन्होंने गुरु टी। के। महालिंगम पिल्लई से भारत नाट्यम सीखा, जो नट्वनरों में शामिल थे। 1950 के दशक के मध्य के बाद, दमयंती ने पंडितों, अचन महाराज, लच्छू महाराज और लखनऊ घराने के शंभू महाराज और जयपुर घराने के गुरु हीरालाल से प्रशिक्षण लेते हुए एक सफल एकल कथक नर्तकी के रूप में खुद को स्थापित किया। विशेष रूप से, कथक केंद्र, दिल्ली में, उन्होंने शंभू महाराज के अधीन प्रशिक्षण लिया। वह बिरेश्वर गौतम के गुरु भी थे।

उन्होंने लखनऊ के इंदिरा कला विश्व विद्यालय, खैरागढ़ और कथक केंद्र में कथक भी पढ़ाया। उन्हें  (1968) में  संगीत नाटक अकादमी से सम्मानित किया गया है और 1970 में भारत सरकार द्वारा  पद्म श्री से सम्मानित किया गया है। श्रीमती  दमयंती जोशी जी को 1971  भारत सरकार द्वारा कथक पर बनाई गयी फिल्म् डिवीजन  वृत्तचित्र में भी  चित्रित किया गया है, और हुकुमत सरीन द्वारा निर्देशित “दमयंती जोशी” नामक एक और फिल्म 1973 में बनाई गई थी।श्रीमती  दमयंती जोशी जी  का निधन 19 सितंबर, 2004 को दादर, मुंबई में अपने घर पर हो गया।
