Pandit Jailal Maharaj Ji occupies a prominent place among the dancers of the Jaipur Gharana. He was born in 1885 AD. Jailal Maharaj Ji, received dance education from his father Pandit Chunnilal, uncle Durgaprasad and Maharaj Bindaddin of Lucknow.
He was first associated with the Jaipur Darbar and after that, he also worked as a court dancer in the states of Jodhpur, Sikri, Raigad, and Maihar. Jailal Maharaj Ji, was also in Nepal for some time. He visited many other parts of the country and continued to teach Kathak dance wherever he went. Apart from being a skilled Kathak dancer, he was also a tabla, pakhawaj, flute, and harmonium player of the highest order. He said that in Kathak dance, remarkable rhythmic subtlety, diversity, intensity, and grace were introduced.
Contribution in Kathak
Raja Chakradhar Singh of Raigad respected you very much. While living in Raigad, he imparted dance education to Karthik – Ram, Kalyanadas, and Vaishnavas. His most famous students are the late Jayakumari Ji (daughter), late dancer Pandit Ramgopal Ji (son), Guru Sushmita Mishra (daughter-son-in-law), Karthik, and Raigad. Kalyan, Sundar Prasad ji, Sohanlal and Hiralal ji are from Chennai, Radhelal, Shyo Dutta, Hiralal, Puviya Bahi, Mrs. Bela Arnab, etc. Jayakumari, the son of Pt. Jailal had two sons. Both of them also became the best dancers of their time. At the last moment, he started imparting dance education in Calcutta’s “Vani Vidyapeeth”. Pt. Jailal maharaj died in calcultta at the age of 64 year in 1949 .
Pt. Jailal maharaj was considered a great priest of rhythm. Apart from dance, tabla, and pakhawaj players also considered your iron. The smooth presentation of big rhythms, full use of the miracles of rhythm, long-long parane, parmelu, jati-paran, bird-paran, tandava paran, and impressive reading were the characteristics of your dance. You prepared many disciples, among whom Radhe Lal, Ramanlal, etc. are prominent.

पंडित जयलाल महाराज जी की जीवन-यात्रा जिनहोने कथक नृत्य के इतिहास में अपना बहुत योगदान दिया आज हम उन्ही की जीवनी के बारे में जानेगे।
जयपूर घराने के नर्तकों में पंडित जयलाल महाराज जी का प्रमुख स्थान है। इनका जन्म सन् 1885 ई. मे हुआ था। इन्होने नृत्य की शिक्षा अपने पिता पंडित चुन्नीलाल , चाचा दुगाप्रसाद एवं लखनऊ के महाराज बिंदादीन से प्राप्त की।
वे पहले जयपुर दरबार से जुड़े थे और उसके बाद उन्होंने जोधपुर, सीकरी, रायगढ़ और मैहर राज्यों में दरबारी नृतक के रूप में भी काम किया। वह नेपाल में भी कुछ समय के लिए था। उन्होंने देश के कई अन्य हिस्सों का दौरा किया और जहाँ भी गए कथक नृत्य सिखाते रहे। एक कुशल कथक नर्तक होने के अलावा, वह तबला, पखवाज, बांसुरी और उच्चतम श्रेणी के हारमोनियम वादक भी थे। उन्होंने कहा कि कथक नृत्य में उल्लेखनीय लयबद्ध सूक्ष्मता, विविधता, गहनता और अनुग्रह का परिचय दिया गया था।
कथक नृत्य में योगदान
रायगढ़ के राजा चक्रधर सिंह आपका बहुत सम्मान करते थे। रायगढ़ मे रहकर आपने कार्तिक – राम , कल्याणदास व वैष्णव को नृत्य शिक्षा प्रदान की।उनके सबसे प्रसिद्ध छात्र स्वर्गीय जयकुमारी जी (बेटी), स्वर्गीय नृत्याचार्य पंडित रामगोपाल जी (पुत्र), गुरु सुष्मिता मिश्रा (पुत्री-दामाद), कार्तिक और रायगढ़ के कल्याण, सुंदर प्रसाद जी, चेन्नई के सोहनलाल और हीरालाल जी हैं , राधेलाल, श्यो दत्ता, हीरालाल, पूवीया बहने, श्रीमती बेला अर्नब, आदि थे। पं. जयलाल की संतान जयकुमारी के दो पुत्र थे। ये दोनों भी अपने समय के श्रेष्ठ नर्तक हुए। अंतिम समय में कलकत्ता की ” वाणी विद्यापीठ ” में नृत्य शिक्षा प्रदान करने लगे। यही इनकी मृत्यु लगभग 64 वर्ष की आयु में सन् 1949 में हुई।
पं. जयलाल ताल-लय के महा – पंडित माने जाते थे। आप नृत्य के अलावा, तबला व पखावज वादक भी आपका लोहा मानते थे । बड़ी बड़ी तालो की सहज प्रस्तुति, लयकारी के चमत्कार पूर्ण प्रयोग लम्बी-लम्बी परने, परमेलु , जाति- परन , पक्षी- परन् , ताण्डव परन व प्रभावशाली पढ़ंत आपके नृत्य की विशेषताएं थी । आपने अनेक शिष्य तैयार किए, जिनमें राधेलाल, रमनलाल आदि प्रमुख है।
