The Lucknow Gharana is considered to be the predominant Gharana of the Kathak dance style. In this Gharana, the practice of dancing in small- small pieces of tode or tukde has been going on for years, special attention is given to the beautiful and hand-made structure (Hastamudrae) of the limbs in pieces and less to the cleanliness of the footwork. Apart from the dance lyrics in this Gharana, the Parans of Pakhawaj and the words of Primlu are also danced but the promotion of dance in poetry is less in the Lucknow Gharana.
“Dhatak Thunga and Kidnak Thun Thun Natitata” are particularly popular in this family. There is also a ‘Thaath’ of making this song. In this Gharana has a greater representation of Gatnikas and less representation of Gatbhav. The custom of making “Ghata” from both sides has been going on for centuries. Singing from Thumri to Bhava is the specialty of this house which is promoted by the head chef Bindadin. The history of Lucknow Gharana is like this.

Pandit Ishwar Prasad Ji
Lucknow Gharana started with pandit Ishwar Prasad Ji. Who was a resident of Chaubula village of Handia Tehsil of Allahabad . It is heard that Lord Shri Krishna inspired Ishwar Prasad Ji to make Bhagavat of Kathak dance in the dream. He had three sons Adagu, Khadagu and Tullu. Ishwar Prasad Ji also taught his sons till the age of 100 years.
Adugu Ji
Adugu ji had 3 sons, Prakash Ji, Dayal Ji, and Heerlal Ji, says that at the age of 105, Ishwar Prasad Ji died of a snake bite, And then his 75-year-old wife got Sati with him. After the death of the parents, Khadag Ji gave up the dance and Talugu Ji retired. After Adagu, his three sons Prakashji Aadi settled in Lucknow. He worked as a Kathak dancer in the court of Nawab Asaf-ud-Daula there.
Prakash Ji
Prakash ji had 3 sons, Durga Prasad ji, Thakur Prasad ji and Maan ji Maharaj. Thakur Prasad Ji was the dance guru in the court of Nawab Wajid Ali Shah and was offered gold in the form of Dakshina. Thakur Prasad Ji gained a lot of fame in Kathak dance. The Ganesh Paran you composed was a lot of fame.
Durga Prasad Ji
Durga Prasad ji had 3 sons, Maharaj Bindadin ji, Kalka prasad ji and Bhairav prasad ji. Maharaj Bindadin Ji was proficient in singing and producing Thumri, Bindadin Ji composed many hoon thumri. You made disciples of the then-famous prostitutes Gauhar Jaan and Jauhar Jaan, even while being surrounded by prostitutes, you retained your character. The pair of Maharaj Bindadin Ji and Kalka Prasad Ji was famous as the pair of Ram Laxman.
Kalka Prasad Ji
Kalka Prasad Ji had 3 sons, Achan Maharaj, Lachhu Maharaj, and Shambhu Maharaj, all three were well versed in dance art. The son of Acchan Maharaj was Brijmohanji, who we know as Birju Maharaj. Mr. Birju Maharaj has been the director of the Kathak Center, New Delhi, and is also considered as the Kathak representative of the country. Shri Shambhu Maharaj, Shri Krishna Mohan, 2 sons of Shri Ram Mohan also live in the practice of Kathak dance.

ईश्वर प्रसाद जी
लखनऊ घराने का प्रारंभ श्री ईश्वर प्रसाद जी से माना गया है। जो कि इलाहाबाद के हंडिया तहसील के चुलबुला ग्राम निवासी थ। ऐसा सुना गया है कि ईश्वर प्रसाद जी को स्वप्न में भगवान श्रीकृष्ण ने कथक नृत्य की भागवत बनाने की प्रेरणा दी। इनके तीन पुत्र थे अडगु जी, खडगु जी और तुल्लू जी थे। ईश्वर प्रसाद जी ने 100 वर्ष तक की आयु मैं भी अपने पुत्रों को शिक्षा दी।
अडगु जी
अडगु जी के 3 पुत्र थे,प्रकाश जी, दयाल जी और हीरलाल जी ,कहते हैं 105 वर्ष की आयु में ईश्वर प्रसाद जी को सर्प के काटने से उनका निधन हो गया और तब इनकी 75 वर्षीय पत्नी इनके साथ सती को प्राप्त हो गई । माता-पिता की मृत्यु के बाद खडगु जी ने नृत्य छोड़ दिया और तलगु जी ने संन्यास ले लिया। अडगु जी के बाद उनके तीनों पुत्र प्रकाशजी आदि लखनऊ जा बसे इन्होंने वहां नवाब आसफुद्दौला के दरबार में कथक नृतक के रूप में नौकरी की।
प्रकाश जी
प्रकाश जी के 3 पुत्र थे , दुर्गा प्रसाद जी,ठाकुर प्रसाद जी और मान जी महाराज। ठाकुर प्रसाद जी नवाब वाजिद अली शाह के दरबार मैं नृत्य गुरु थे और उन्हें दक्षिणा के रूप में सोना प्रदान किया जाता था। ठाकुर प्रसाद जी ने कथक नृत्य में बहुत ख्याति प्राप्त की आपने ही कथक नृत्य को नटवरी नृत्य के नाम से प्रख्यात किया। आपके द्वारा रची गई गणेश परण बहुत प्रसिद्धि थी।
दुर्गा प्रसाद जी
दुर्गा प्रसाद जी के 3 पुत्र थे, महाराज बिन्दादिन जी, कालका प्रसाद जी और भैरव प्रसाद जी। महाराज बिंदादीन जी ठुमरी गायन और निर्माण में कुशल थे , बिंदादीन जी ने कई सो ठुमरी बनाई थी। आपने उस समय की प्रसिद्ध वेश्या गौहर जान और जोहर जान को भी आपने शिष्य बनाया ,वेश्याओं से घिरे रहने के बाद भी आपने आपका चरित्र कायम रखा। महाराज बिंदादिन जी और कालका प्रसाद जी की जोड़ी राम लक्ष्मण की जोड़ी के सामान प्रसिद्ध थी।
कालका प्रसाद जी
कालका प्रसाद जी के 3 पुत्र थे,अच्छन महाराज, लच्छू महाराज और शंभू महाराज यह तीनों ही नृत्य कला में निपुण थे। अच्छन महाराज के पुत्र बृजमोहन जी थे, जिन्हें हम बिरजू महाराज के नाम से जानते हैं। श्री बिरजू महाराज जी कथक केंद्र नई दिल्ली के निर्देशक रह चुके हैं और देश के कथक प्रतिनिधि भी माने जाते है। श्री शंभू महाराज के 2 पुत्र श्री कृष्ण मोहन श्री राम मोहन भी कथक नृत्य की साधना में रहते हैं।
